Located in eastern Asia on the South China Sea bordered by China to the north. Total land area of approximately 415 sq. miles made up of Hong Kong Island with an area of about 29 sq. miles, Kowloon Peninsula and Stonecutters Island (6 sq. miles) and the New Territories, made up principally of a large area on the mainland and Lantau Island.
Now a Special Administrative Region of China it was a dependency of the UK following the Treaty of Nanking (1842) until July 1997 when it became a Special Administrative Region of China.
